Having your own home gives you the liberty to choose design styles for your house, including the roofing style. It would be interesting to see how your new home would look with the appropriate roofing style and roofing material. Roofing is an expensive component of any structure that the designer and the homeowner consider to match the whole budget. Here are some roofing style options to help you choose.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are one of the most common and popular roofing materials for many reasons. It is cheap, easy to install, durable, comes in different colors, and manufacturers can offer up to a 40 year warranty.

According to cityseamlessroofing.com, the two basic types of asphalt shingles are the fiberglass-based and the organic-based shingles. The fiberglass-reinforced shingles have a reputation of lasting longer, being lightweight, and having higher resistance to fire. Organic-based shingles are always available for purchase at a cheaper amount.

Asphalt shingles come in two main categories, the architectural-style shingles, and the three-tab shingles. The common three-tab shingles is a generic and fundamental style in which each shingle has a thick layer, and has two slots that create the three tabs. Architectural shingles have two strips of asphalt roofing, which are laid alternatively.

Cedar Roofing

Cedar roofing may be a bit more expensive than other roofing materials, and it can be complicated to install, but its natural beauty is incomparable. It has a distinctive western red cedar texture that makes it stand out, but it has less resistance to fire than other options. The good news is that most suppliers of cedar roofing today give their products a fire-retardant treatment.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has been gaining marketability in the past decades because of its features. They are exceptionally durable, easily installed, and recyclable. Metal roofs are available in several colors, and they can shed snow and ice with ease. Its design matches a variety of architectural styles like New England colonials and Carolina coastal cottages. Metal roofing has overlapping panels, made of steel, copper, zinc, or aluminum. The standing seam and corrugated panels are the most common metal roofing styles.

Slate Roofing

People have been using slate roofing from the 1600s until today. It is considered a first-rate material because of its durability, fire-resistance, mildew resistance, and can last at least one hundred years with proper installation. Slate roofing is costly to purchase and install. Slates are heavy, and you need a structural engineer to design the roof framing to avoid any failure from installing slate roofing.

Clay and Concrete Tiles

Clay and concrete tile roofing are a perfect match for Mediterranean or Spanish style homes. The tiles are made from earthen clay and a Portland cement mixture that creates a powerful appearance, fire resistance, durability, water resistance, and energy efficiency. These tiles are available in different shapes and profiles, some of which are fire-glazed, or unglazed in different colors. Concrete slabs are either in gray color or with decorative coating.

Synthetic-Composite Shingles

Synthetic-composite shingles roofing is one of the latest types of roofing. It is made from engineered plastic composite, which gives desirable characteristics such as rot-proof, fire-resistance, weatherproof, and almost unbreakable. It is also known as faux shingles because it resembles cedar shingles or the natural slate tiles.

The synthetic-composite shingles’ installation process is almost the same as the other shingles, using the same tools and skills. It may look the same as the other shingles roofing, but the synthetic-composite provides more durability and longer lifespan. With all these characteristics, it made the product three to four times more expensive than the other shingles.

You can now choose which roofing material options are best for your new home. If you are planning for a home improvement instead, you should consult with professional designers to create a more desirable outcome for your home, especially when it comes to your exteriors.
