Bringing Privacy to Your Backyard with Hedges or Shrubs
You probably don’t intend to hide from your neighbors but face it; we all want a little privacy and space for ourselves in our own personal retreat. For the most part shrubs are easy to take care of, don’t need much maintenance, and are a naturally eco-friendly way of putting up a sturdy fence. I find them a great alternative to regular fencing since they give an instant look of a well-manicured lawn and can last forever.
- Pests aren’t going to be a problem but making sure you prune your shrubs a few times a year is vital. You don’t need to do fancy designs, as simply cutting back branches will do the trick.
- Be patient as your hedge can take up to three years to go from knee-high to should-high. The first two years will be slow, and the third year it should grow vigorously.
- Remember that hedges are all spaced differently. A 60-foot hedge may need 20 plants, or as many as 60.
BDB Tip: For speedy results build a masonry wall and grow your shrubs on top. This beats waiting for your tough plants to grow high enough to provide privacy.
