I’m Dreaming! Tour the Perfect American Residence
Here is a little residential eye candy to start off the week – a stunning Lake Bluff home that kind of reminds me of the homes we saw on Desperate Housewives! It’s just perfect from the lawn to the trees, windows, and shingles. It is a little girly but I have to admit the lifestyle at this home does come off a little surreal. The landscaping was done very well and the choice of trees for the property was dead-on. The large trees in the foreground are Aristocrat pears that are fairly quick growers and provided lots of shade and greenery throughout the year. The home was painted in plain gray and white but what makes it stand out is the pretty pink flowers framing the balcony and a little around the patio. Who knew a few flowers could bring in so much color?

Bringing Privacy to Your Backyard with Hedges or Shrubs
You probably don’t intend to hide from your neighbors but face it; we all want a little privacy and space for ourselves in our own personal retreat. For the most part shrubs are easy to take care of, don’t need much maintenance, and are a naturally eco-friendly way of putting up a sturdy fence. I find them a great alternative to regular fencing since they give an instant look of a well-manicured lawn and can last forever.
- Pests aren’t going to be a problem but making sure you prune your shrubs a few times a year is vital. You don’t need to do fancy designs, as simply cutting back branches will do the trick.
- Be patient as your hedge can take up to three years to go from knee-high to should-high. The first two years will be slow, and the third year it should grow vigorously.
- Remember that hedges are all spaced differently. A 60-foot hedge may need 20 plants, or as many as 60.
BDB Tip: For speedy results build a masonry wall and grow your shrubs on top. This beats waiting for your tough plants to grow high enough to provide privacy.
