How to Faux Malachite Finish

Required:

  • Pale blue/green base coat
  • Emerald green glaze and paint
  • Piece of cardboard
  • High gloss finish
  • Gold leaf paint
  • Fan brush and regular paint brush

1.) Find a surface you want to cover in Malachite and apply a base coat of pale blue/green.

2.) Mix in 3 parts glaze with 1 part paint in a deep emerald green. To make the color darker, add black or blue and yellow to brighten.

3.) Brush the paint onto the area and quickly remove it with torn pieces of cardboard, mimicking the wiggly Malachite curves. You can also use a fan brush for this technique.

4.) Keep paining on more glaze and removing. To soften the hard lines and thick edges, use a brush and lightly tap the surface to flatten it.

5.) Once dry, coat your whole surface with a high gloss finish. For the brass, a gold leaf finish was used to give a more antiqued gilt look. Voila!

    :| ;-) Hello! I love the technique! If my vase can look as good as your lamp, I will save myself HUNDREDS of dollars! I am so anxious to start. Can you please tell me what brand of paint you used? How about posting a pic of the materials. Also the lamp you started with, I am assuming it was ceramic.I am trying to mimick your technique for superior results! You did a beautiful job.
